# V3RBO — Mitja Bombardieri > Writer since the '90s, first drawings in Deluxe Paint on an Amiga 500. For thirty years he has been studying the letter and its media drifts: from spray paint to the projector, from FLxER, the software he has co-developed since 2002, to VR headsets and artificial intelligence. Mitja Bombardieri, aka V3RBO (Bergamo, 1977): graffiti writer, visual artist, VJ and creative technologist. Crews and collectives: PDB, BGM · Bergamasterz, FLxER Team, B/Muvis Videoklan. ## Links - [V3RBO's timeline](https://www.v3rbo.com/timeline/): complete archive of works 1990–today (street, code, live cinema, digital, AI) - [Website](https://www.v3rbo.com/) - [Instagram @v3rbo](https://www.instagram.com/v3rbo/) - [Flickr](https://www.flickr.com/photos/meta2/) - [YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/@MitjaVerboBombardieri) - [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/v3rbo) - Contact: info@v3rbo.com ## Biography (English) ### 1990–2001 · Street Mitja Bombardieri was born in Bergamo in 1977 and grew up, from the 1990s, inside the European school of graffiti writing. His first crew was ADP; then came his lasting affiliations: BGM, the Bergamasterz of Bergamo, and the historic PDB crew. His works soon stood out, and he was called on for major international events, for collaborations with big brands and for public works commissioned by many European municipalities. He grew up as an artist among railway tracks, rooftops and pavements: his name soon began to circulate in the Italian underground scene through train carriages, and his works were published in national and international magazines for the originality of the style and the sheer quantity of his production. At the end of the decade he joined PDB, one of the most important Italian crews for its contribution of style on metal, with Blef, Cento, Wany, Eron, Sir2, Rizla, Kemh and Bol. In the same years he made his first computer images, with Deluxe Paint 4 on a Commodore Amiga 500. Spray paint and pixels set off together. His was the first generation raised under the television bombardment of cartoons and video games: from there comes an aesthetic of play and dream that sits between ethereal mass-media communication and the concreteness of metropolitan asphalt, condensed into a sharp, sculptural sign. His style strikes first for its technical difficulty, all the more so in the hardest situations such as illegal pieces, and for the strong three-dimensional dynamism of the letters. The bright, contrasting colours, the joints between letters and the armour recall the spaceships and robots of late-seventies and eighties Japanese manga, if not cyberpunk culture itself: each letter becomes a game of interlocking and intersecting volumes, dynamics and vanishing lines. The celebration of style is the core message of his paintings, and at the same time an emotional vehicle for his own contemporary life. From 1997 the study of his code turns into dynamic, sculptural forms, built like armour protecting the soul of the letter, “innocent as the attitude of a child writing in his first ABC book”. They are true exoskeletons of biomechanical insects that fight every day to keep the essence of the gesture alive in the urban ecosystem, contaminating it visually. This is the mecha style. These creatures stand for the ferment of a spontaneous subculture that spreads beyond social superstructures and brings unexpected, fresh aesthetic forms to the surface, “the way bees carry pollen to flowers”. ### 2002–2006 · Code as a spray can Beyond the painting techniques of graffiti culture, Verbo introduces new visual rules through computers, projectors and software. From 2002 he co-develops FLxER, free software for mixing video in real time, with which he performs as a visual artist in electronic music venues under the name VJ Meta2, within the FLxER Team and the B/Muvis Videoklan collective. Among the performances of this second life is Sónar in Barcelona, in 2006. He then moves the electronic equipment from inside the clubs out onto the street. His videoincursioni, or videoraids, find a more congenial audience: back to the street, where you speak to everyone alike by switching on light signals in the dark of the night, and where a location transforms and becomes an essential part of the visual performance. They keep the immediacy of writing, but they paint with light and leave no physical trace. In those years he lived in Rome. With Bluecheese Project he organised the international event Hi-Fight (2002–2005) and “7 re di Roma” for the Roma Hip-Hop Parade, while with the Xpression association he made large murals for the municipalities of Bergamo and its province. He toured Europe as a guest at conventions: Marseille in 2000, Meeting of Styles in Münster in 2003 and in Padua in 2005 and 2006, the 100 Contest in Paris; in 2004 he won the Italian selection of Write4Gold. At the 47th Floor solo show he presented 21 works covering thirteen years of study on his lettering. In 2003 he launches “Lettering Studio Cross The Matrix”, an extensive study of lettering that from then on runs through all his research. From 2004 comes the project of a mass literacy campaign: the spreading of the Verbo, the Word, a play on words and letters that is anything but random. He also chooses to work with the art market, blending street attitude with some principles of pop art. The same year the solo show “Verbo, stile dalla A alla Z” at the 47th Floor in Rome dissects the alphabet, treating each letter as an autonomous architectural module. Then come In_Chiostro in the Cloister of San Francesco in Bergamo, 48 segnalibri in Naples with INWARD, Musei di notte at GAMeC in Bergamo and the A3 project, which travels from NotGallery in Naples to Milan and Bologna. ### 2007–2009 · Consecration 2007 is the turning point for street art in Italy. Street Art Sweet Art, at the PAC in Milan, invites the leading names of the scene to work directly on the walls of a public museum for the first time. Alongside Blu, Ericailcane, Bo130 and Microbo, Verbo brings technical wildstyle and shows that the evolution of the letter has the same dignity as figurative painting. From 2007 he also works with television as a medium, presenting a study of his calligraphy that celebrates style and, at the same time, the relationship between the writer and the social context: a symbiosis essential to the very essence of this form of expression. Choosing to work on printing plates, the matrices that symbolise mass communication, no longer means only crossing and laying yourself out in the urban context in order to appear: it means crossing advertising itself, in a confrontation that is the perfect synthesis of the act of writing. Gesture and context, that is, style celebrating the contemporary. From here grows the body of plate works of Lettering Studio Cross The Matrix. The plates are chosen from ones already engraved: in them you can recognise the everyday graphic motifs of the social and cultural context he has confronted from the very start. The works are made in one go, quick freestyles that freeze the exact moment in which they are produced, “an execution that for Verbo can last a whole night or a minute, the time it takes to finish or the time it takes not to get caught”. In 2008 comes international reach: Street Art Buenos Aires at the Centro Cultural Recoleta and Street Art, from graffiti to painting, Italy–Brazil, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in São Paulo, curated by Vittorio Sgarbi and Fabio Magalhães. In 2009 his works, including CMYK, go under the hammer at the Millon Cornette de Saint Cyr auction at La Cigale in Paris. The same year his Rome videoraids become the international campaign for Firefox's fifth birthday. ### 2010–2011 · Corporate hacking On other occasions the search for the sign leads him to contrasting performative acts. For /BAN.King, a permanent site-specific work for Intesa Sanpaolo in Milan Bonola, he involves 60 executives as a performative medium, building a celebratory parallel of the company within the world of writing. The bank, the institution that stands above all for capital and order, the natural enemies of vandal writing, thus ends up “writing” through the bodies of those who manage money. The project becomes a book, presented at Feltrinelli in Bergamo in 2011. In 2011 he takes part in the 54th Venice Biennale, Italian Pavilion, Lombardy Region section at Palazzo Lombardia. In the same months come the engravings on plate, with the matrix “Alfabeto italiano contemporaneo e le 5 lettere straniere”, and a private door clad in engraved CMYK printing plates. It is also the time of the occupation of the former O.T.E. factory, turned into the Illegal Atelier, of ARTAQ in Angers, the European awards that each year single out the most representative artists of the urban arts, and of “The Architect”, a site-specific work inside Santa Maria delle Croci in Ravenna. ### 2012–2016 · Light and live cinema Videomapping becomes architecture. On 28 February 2012 the letters go onto the façade of Milan Cathedral; in 2013 “100 Rintocchi” brings the Campanone of Bergamo to life within I Maestri del Paesaggio. “Meta vs Verbo”, at the Teatro Sociale in Bergamo, puts his two identities, the VJ and the writer, on the same stage in a performance between graffiti and mapping. With the architect Romolo Stanco comes e-QBO, a photovoltaic cube with a graffiti skin and videomapping, shown at the Fuorisalone and later landing in the archaeological park of Selinunte; with him also the interiors B.EAT BE.AT BEAT, I've got somethin' to say and MISTRAL. On the street, the big walls: the towers of Parco Dora at Picturin with Graphic Surgery and 2501, RestArt at the Imola racetrack with Mr. Wany and Weik, Rome's number 19 tram for Tracks, a whole car crossing the city. In 2013 the film “Dinamo” with Jorge Lorenzo, a freestyle performance inspired by the Futurist manifesto. From 2014, the Live Cinema Festival in Rome: the simultaneous creation of images and sound is, for him, the digital extension of freestyle, and the videoraids become sets that explore the media drifts of lettering. ### 2017–2020 · Virtual ontologies In recent years he has devoted himself to virtual and augmented reality tools and to artificial intelligence, creating a series of works with them. In 2017 the group show “Walk the Line” at the Villa Croce Museum of Contemporary Art in Genoa traces the evolution of lettering. The live performance “Untilted.mvp”, at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome in 2019 with Mmrk, uses headsets and controllers to paint in an empty virtual space while the audience watches on big screens. The movement of the arm is the same as painting a train, but the result is pure light. In 2020 the solo show “Metabugs”, in VR for Art City Bologna, curated by Claudio Musso,, immerses the viewer among three-dimensional mechanical insects made of letters. The heart of the work stays the same: developing the letter according to the rules of aerosol art and style writing. ### 2021–2023 · After the pandemic In 2021 he takes part in the panel “Great Wave of NFTs in Digital Art” and in the Interspace exhibition at the Internet Festival in Pisa, shows at XNL Piacenza with Luca Font and presents interactive installations for the fifth edition of Fotonica in Rome. In 2022 he joins the selections of Live Cinema Made in Italy as a reference figure, helping to discover new audiovisual artists. With “XYZ · Passaggi formali”, at the Acquario Romano for Fotonica in December 2023, twenty years of research between architecture and light are condensed into an audiovisual installation. ### 2024–2026 · Memory and future The museum path does not start here: it begins as early as 2005 at GAMeC in Bergamo and runs through the PAC in Milan, the MAC in São Paulo, the Venice Biennale, MACRO, Villa Croce and the Palazzo delle Esposizioni. FRONTIERA 40, Italian Style Writing 1984–2024, at MAMbo in Bologna curated by Fabiola Naldi, shows his sketches and recognises their value as design. “In My Name. Above the Show”, between Treviso and Monopoli curated by Martina Cavallarin, exhibits him alongside Etnik, Joys and Peeta. With “26 lettere per inciso” the mecha alphabet returns to recycled printing plates, in UV print, and an augmented reality layer sets it in motion: matter and code in the same work. Over all these years he has been involved in developing viral campaigns for brands such as The North Face, Puma, Coca-Cola, Nokia, Nike, Levi's and Circa, and he appears in publications ranging from magazines to history books to international reviews. ### Notes - **1994 · First jobs** — From 1994, his first paid painting work: interior and exterior decoration and set-ups for bars, pubs, shops, clubs, signs and private clients. - **1995 · ADP** — ADP is born: Verbo's first crew, which will later become BGM. - **1999 · BGM · Bergamasterz** — The crew takes the name BGM, Bergamasterz: his lasting affiliation, together with PDB. In quegli anni vive a Roma. «In My Name.
